Statement Of Faith

What We Believe At Lagoonside Church, Knysna.
We believe that what we believe shapes how we live. We are an evangelical, Bible-believing, baptistic church centered on Jesus Christ, committed to His Word, and passionate about making disciples.

The following is a simple summary of our core beliefs. For a fuller explanation, you can download our complete Statement of Faith.
The Bible

We believe the Bible, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired Word of God. It is trustworthy and sufficient and is our final authority for what we believe and how we live. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 | 2 Peter 1:20–21
GodWe believe in one true and living God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created all things, rules over all things, and is holy, loving, righteous, gracious, and worthy of all our worship. Deuteronomy 6:4 | Matthew 28:19
Jesus ChristWe believe Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man.
He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross in the place of sinners, and physically rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and will come again.
John 1:1–14 | 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 | Acts 1:9–11
The Holy SpiritWe believe the Holy Spirit is fully God and is actively at work in the world and in every believer. He gives spiritual life, indwells those who belong to Christ, helps us understand God's Word, produces spiritual fruit, equips us for service, and increasingly transforms us to become like Jesus. John 16:7–14 | Romans 8:9–16 | Galatians 5:22–25
Humanity and SinWe believe every human being is created in the image of God and therefore has dignity and value. Yet all humanity has been affected by sin. We have rebelled against God and cannot restore ourselves to Him through religion, morality, good works, or personal effort. We need a Saviour! Genesis 1:26–27 | Romans 3:23 | Romans 6:23
SalvationWe believe salvation is God's gift of grace and is received through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Jesus died in our place and rose again. Everyone who repents and places their trust in Him receives forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life. Salvation cannot be earned. It is received by grace through faith.
John 3:16 | Romans 5:1 | Romans 10:9–13 | Ephesians 2:8–9
The Christian LifeWe believe following Jesus should transform the way we live. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, Christians are called to grow in holiness, love, humility, prayer, generosity, service, obedience, and Christlike character.
We don't live for Christ in order to earn salvation; we live for Christ because we have received salvation. Romans 12:1–2 | Galatians 5:16–25 | Colossians 3:1–17
The ChurchWe believe the Church is made up of all who genuinely belong to Jesus Christ. The local church is a family of believers who gather to worship God, learn His Word, pray, encourage and care for one another, make disciples, and take the Gospel into the world.
Jesus Christ is the Head of His Church, and Scripture is our final authority.
Acts 2:41–47 | Ephesians 1:22–23 | Colossians 1:18
Baptism and the Lord's SupperWe believe baptism is for those who have personally trusted Jesus Christ. We practice believer's baptism by immersion as a public testimony of faith and identification with Christ.
We celebrate the Lord's Supper in remembrance of Christ's death for us, in fellowship with one another, and in anticipation of His return. Matthew 28:19–20 | Romans 6:3–4 | 1 Corinthians 11:23–26
Marriage and FamilyWe believe God created humanity male and female and established marriage as the covenant union of one man and one woman. We believe sexual intimacy is God's good gift within marriage and that followers of Jesus are called to faithfulness and sexual purity.
We also believe that every person bears God's image and should therefore be treated with dignity, compassion, respect, and love. Genesis 1:27 | Genesis 2:24 | Matthew 19:4–6
Our MissionWe believe Jesus has commissioned His Church to make disciples of all nations.
We therefore want to proclaim the Gospel, teach God's Word, make disciples, plant churches, care for people, serve our communities, and equip believers to live faithfully for Jesus wherever God has placed them.
Matthew 28:18–20 | Acts 1:8 | 2 Corinthians 5:18–20
Our HopeWe believe Jesus Christ is coming again.
We believe in the resurrection of the dead, final judgment, everlasting life for those who belong to Christ, and the ultimate fulfilment of God's Kingdom.
Our hope is ultimately not in this world, but in Jesus Christ and His coming Kingdom. John 14:1–3 | 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 | Revelation 21:1–5
